If you’re looking for a fun, fall activity to get the family out of the house this weekend, Second Wave Coffee and Books has an event for you.
Located at 529 South Lake Drive, in Lexington South Carolina, Second Wave Coffee and Books is hosting a community pumpkin patch. According to the Facebook Event Page, there will be a beer garden, tons of games, things to do for the kids, and a smores fire ring. The event kicks of tomorrow, Friday, October 2nd at 10 AM.
Featured in The State Newspaper back in 2017, Second Wave Coffee & Books is undoubtedly unlike any other coffee store. Consequently, The State beautifully highlights what makes Second Wave, unlike any other coffee shop. The coffee shop/bookstore combo is an Arc of the Midlands employment initiative.
Heartwarmingly, Arc of the Midlands provides employment opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Second Wave Coffee & Books highlights their mission on their Facebook page. In the spotlight on their cover photo, Second Wave displays the following mission statement: “Achieving full community life for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD)- one person at a time.” Additionally, Second Wave raises diversity and inclusion awareness utilizing the hashtags #withpurpose and #communitystrong.
What’s great to see are the hundreds of raving reviews across multiple platforms. On Facebook, Second Wave Coffee & Books is rated five out of five stars on Facebook. Additionally, they’ve received the tag of “Popular with locals.” One review reads, “Second Wave serves great food and drinks. The atmosphere is exceptional, and they do an excellent job working with the community.”
While scrolling through the photos that demonstrate how excellent Second Wave Coffee & Books is, it’s apparent that they support other local businesses. Over the summer, Mad Batter Cupcakery LLC announced they had various delicious dessert snacks for purchase at Second Wave Coffee & Books.
Remarkably, Second Wave Coffee & Books is one of several community initiatives supported by Arc of the Midlands. According to their website, these initiatives are funded by “grants from government, private foundations and other dedicated sources.” One of them is Wings for Autism®. Wings for Autism® helps individuals with autism spectrum disorders and their families have rehearsals for airport traveling.
In addition to their state and regional initiatives, Arc of the Midlands also provides residential services to intellectual and/or developmental disabilities in Richland and Lexington counties. Their ultimate goal is statewide expansion. Residents are placed in environments where they work together with staff to “maintain a comfortable, safe, and healthy home environment.”
Starting tomorrow at 10 AM, visit Second Wave Coffee and Books for their Pumpkin Patch. Later tomorrow, visit Second Wave Coffee and Books again for Music Bingo! Keep on eye on their Facebook page, since they have great events all the time. Check back with Lexington Yankee for more things to do around town.
